Sermon, Sunday May 25, 2014

During my time in grade school a gang formed under the leadership of the biggest kids. Guys my age were doing truly unsafe things to get into the gang; giving themselves tattoos, breaking into the school, driving city streets long before they had a license. Anything to get in. There was great fear about not getting into the gang so they were doing really scary things to combat that fear. Fear works like that, it feeds on itself. People today still do inane things to try to fit in. There is a another ‘gang option’ but it is based on hope. It looks and feels entirely different.

  2. Observe the details of Saul’s leadership and compare it to David’s leadership. What is the difference between the way they were thinking? Contrast the way they motivated their followers.
  3. What areas of leadership and influence do you have? Articulate what it would be like for you to lead with fear as motivation. Now describe what it would be like for you to lead with hope as the primary motivation.
